FAQ

How does it work?

At Consign My Clutter, we take care of everything from start to finish. We come to your home to photograph, measure, and assess your items, then market them online, secure buyers, and coordinate pickups—all from the comfort of your home. While we don’t have a storefront or remove all items at once, we handle pricing, posting, and scheduling pickups. Plus, we offer free delivery services to ensure a smooth transaction for every sale.

Where are you located?

We are a BC-based business serving the Vancouver Lower Mainland. Our service area includes the municipalities of Vancouver, North Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, Richmond, Delta, Tsawwassen, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Maple Ridge, Surrey, White Rock, Langley, and Abbotsford.

What are your fees?

We operate on a commission-based model, which means we only get paid when your items sell. Our standard commission rate is 40%, with 60% of the final sale price going to you.

During your 30-day consignment term, all funds from sales are collected in trust. At the end of the term, you’ll receive a detailed sales report and a lump-sum payment via e-transfer or cheque.

Please note that commission rates may vary depending on the time, effort, and resources required to sell certain items. For example, collectibles or specialty goods requiring international shipping or extensive marketing may be subject to a higher commission due to the added complexity.

For a complete breakdown of our fees and commission structure, please contact our team for more details.

What types of items do you NOT accept?

While we’re happy to help you consign quality household items, some items may not meet our consignment criteria due to low resale value—typically under $20. In these cases, we encourage clients to either sell them independently or donate to a local charity.

As part of our full-service decluttering, we can assist with sorting, donation coordination, and pickup arrangements for an additional fee.

We do not accept the following:

  • Broken, damaged, stained, or recalled items

  • Clothing, food, books, CDs, records, photo frames, or framed artwork

  • Outdated technology (e.g., VHS tapes, CD/cassette/DVD players)

  • Dishware, common dishes, or certain decorative and collectible items

Our goal is to offer buyers safe, high-quality household goods that are ready for use. Items that don’t meet these standards should be responsibly discarded. You can contact your local municipality for free pickup services, or we can help arrange disposal at your request.

How long does it take?

We operate on a minimum 30-day consignment agreement to allow adequate time to professionally market and sell your items at the best possible price. Many of our clients are downsizing or working within fixed timelines, so this period ensures we can price and promote your goods competitively.

In some cases, we may accept shorter consignment terms of at least 15 days. If you’re working with a tighter schedule, please contact us to see how we can assist.

While we can accommodate shorter timelines, longer sales windows (45–60 days) are highly recommended. They significantly improve the chances of achieving a higher sale price, as we’re not forced to deeply discount items for quick turnaround. Shorter sales windows often require aggressive price reductions to ensure items are sold and removed within your timeframe.

How do I get started?

To begin, simply give us a call and let us know which items you’re interested in selling. Our experts will guide you through the process and assist in preparing for your in-home consultation.

Preparing for the In-Home Consultation

During the consultation, we’ll visit your home to photograph and inspect the items. To ensure a smooth experience:

  • Clean and assemble all items to be sold.

  • Remove personal belongings not intended for sale (e.g., books and decorations from bookshelves, bedding from beds).

This preparation allows our experts to make the most of their time with you.

Important Reminder: Avoid Illegal Dumping

Please do not discard personal items on public property such as parks, playgrounds, or vacant lots. Illegal dumping is prohibited and can result in fines up to $10,000 in some cities. Beyond legal repercussions, such actions negatively impact our community and are discouraged by fellow residents.
